Venice

Searching for eternal love

Few cities appeal to the imagination as much as Venice does. The grandeur of the historical centre has an enchanting effect. The ideal setting for a romantic adventure…

Water ways

Venice is built on a group of islands in a lagoon. The construction of paved roads encountered architectural problems and, therefore, the city chose water as a means for transport. For centuries, Venice made furore as a trading post. Trade brought riches and this became visible in the UNESCO listed townscape. A boat trip on the Canal Grande (the ‘main street’) is a good way to get a first impression of the city.

From a sigh to a kiss

The beating heart of Venice is Piazza San Marco (Saint Mark’s Square). Here you will find the Gothic Palazzo Ducale di Venezia (Doge’s Palace), the centre of power at the time of the Venetian Republic. At the rear, the ‘Bridge of Sighs’ leads to a former prison. Prisoners who were condemned to death walked across this bridge towards their sentence, while sighing deeply. Nowadays this site has a completely different meaning: lovers who kiss under the bridge will be granted eternal love.

The Campanile (Bell Tower) and the Basilica di San Marco (Saint Mark’s Basilica) are located on the Piazza San Marco as well. The basilica houses the remains of Saint Mark the Evangelist, although this is doubted by some historians: it could also be Alexander the Great.

Clothes and books

As befits an Italian city, it has a wide variety of shopping possibilities. Many well-known brands are located in the street of Calle 22 Marzo and together offer a wide assortment of luxury clothing and stylish shoes. In the side streets you can find small boutiques. Besides clothes shops, book shops are popular as well. For those who are not successful at the Bridge of Sighs: there are also plenty of books about eternal love.
