From Eindhoven to Cluj - Napoca

Cluj - Napoca

An undiscovered gem

The world has truly become a global village. Nowadays, you can travel almost anywhere and destinations off the beaten path are becoming harder to find.  Luckily, there are still places like Cluj-Napoca, an undiscovered gem in the heart of Transylvania. This culturally rich yet still very affordable destination is only a few hours by plane from Eindhoven…

Charmingly historic

The Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca is located in north-western Romania and has a population of around 350,000. It is a university town with an impressive cultural past. The central square (Piata Unirii) is an excellent starting point to explore that past. Here you will find the Gothic St. Michael’s Church, Banffy Palace and an art museum filled with works by 19th and 20th century Romanian artists.

The National Theatre, Tailors’ Tower, remnants of the old city walls and botanical gardens should also not be missed during a trip to this city. The buildings vary from Baroque and Gothic to ornamental and Jugendstil , giving the city a charmingly historic character.

The name ‘Cluj’ means ‘closed’, which refers to the mountains encircling the city. The surrounding area is also well worth exploring. One option is to hike through the Turda Gorge, surrounded on both sides by almost vertical walls.  Tradition has it that King László prayed to God to split the mountain in two so he could escape from his enemies. Whether or not the gorge is the result of divine intervention, breath-taking panoramic views await you.
