Security rules

If you intend to fly you have to comply with strict security checks. These security checks primarily relate to what you, as a passenger, are allowed to take with you onto the aircraft. A check is made on the carriage of hazardous substances and items that could pose a danger to the passengers, crew and/or the safety of the aircraft. The security checks take place in the form of a manual check and/or using detection equipment on both your hand baggage and your hold baggage.

What can be carried and what is prohibited?

To help you avoid taking prohibited items on your flight you can find two lists of prohibited items below. These lists have been compiled by the EU. No rights can be derived from these lists. The security officer reserves the right at all times to refuse any item on security grounds.

Still need to take hazardous substances and items with you?

  • Inform the company you are flying with in good time before the flight.
  • The company can then carry the substances as dangerous air cargo, specially packed, labelled and with special carriage documents.

Packed something wrong by accident?

What should you do if you have accidentally packed your (nail) scissors or pocket knife in your hand baggage or something else that you are not allowed to carry or when the security officer considers an item to be dangerous?

  • You can still place this item in your hold baggage before checking-in.
  • You can surrender this item to the security officer, after which it will be destroyed.

EU rules for liquids and gels in hand baggage

Rules relating to liquids and gels that can be carried in hand baggage apply to all passengers who are departing from - or transferring at - an airport within the European Union (EU).

Liquids and gels can only be carried in your hand baggage on the following conditions:

    • Liquids and gels are in packages of a maximum of 100 millilitres.
    • These packages are placed in one transparent and resealable plastic bag with a maximum capacity of 1 litre.
    • Each individual is allowed to fly with a maximum of one 1-litre bag.
    • Medicines and baby food, which are demonstrably required during the journey, are permitted.

Medicines and baby food
Liquid medicines that a passenger needs for the duration of the journey (= flight plus the stay abroad) are allowed in the hand baggage in quantities greater than 100 ml.  If requested by a security officer the passenger must be able to produce a doctor's prescription or be able to demonstrate that the medicines were prescribed for him/her.

In addition to medicines, (liquid) cooling blocks necessary for the safe transportation of medicines can also be carried.

Special diet food
Liquid special diet food (for lactose/gluten allergy for example) may be carried in hand baggage in quantities greater than 100 millilitres for the duration of the journey (for example soya products).

Baby food
Liquid baby food in quantities greater than 100 millilitres is permitted in hand baggage provided that you are travelling with a baby (soya products for example).
Boiled water (for mixing baby milk in powdered form) is not, however, permitted in hand baggage in quantities greater than 100 millilitres. Check with the airline whether there are onboard facilities for boiling the water needed for the baby.

Duty Free & Tax Free shops

Duty Free & Tax Free items purchased at this airport are permitted in your hand baggage. Liquids and gels will be packed in a specially sealed bag - when necessary - by the shop or on board. Remember that:

    • You must be able to prove that the liquids were purchased on the day you are flying.
    • When you transfer, the seal on the bag containing your liquid Duty Free & Tax Free purchases can only be broken en route to your final destination.

Important

Have you made liquid Duty Free & Tax Free purchases in a non-EU country or on board a non-EU airline? These will be confiscated as soon as you transfer at an EU airport. Confiscation means that you forfeit your right to possession of these liquids and gels.

You must present your liquids and gels separately from your hand baggage at the security checkpoint. The packages must fit comfortably in the transparent plastic bag and the bag must be sealed.

Small metal items (loose change, mobile telephone, keys), coats, jackets and large electrical equipment, such as laptops, must be presented separately at hand baggage screening.
