Environment

Eindhoven Airport N.V. attaches great importance to a good society and concern for the environment has a significant role in this.

Eindhoven Airport N.V. has an environmental management system that complies with the NEN 14001:2004 standard. Internal and external audits are carried out every year within the framework of continuous improvement and constantly testing our own environmental management system.

Noise
Noise is the most dominant environmental aspect of the airport. Most noise at any airport is caused by aircraft but aircraft handling is also a source of noise.
To be able to classify the noise burden caused by aircraft, in 2002 a new methodology for recording aircraft noise was developed, the flight track monitoring system.

Central complaints office
The central complaints office for complaints about noise at Eindhoven air base is:

Koninklijke Luchtmacht Vliegbasis Eindhoven
t.a.v. Bureau Informatie Voorziening (BIC)
PO Box 90102
5600 RA Eindhoven
Tel: +31(0)40-289 61 33 of +31 (0)40-289 61 44
Please state: Geluidsklachten

Air quality

The chief source of air pollution at the airport is, of course, air traffic. Some pollution is caused by aircraft movements, some by ground handling operations. The VVC overview shows that 'quiet' aircraft (VVC3 and 4) are responsible for the vast majority of aircraft movements at the airport. These quieter aircraft have more modern engines which produce not only less noise but also less air pollution.

NO (the Netherlands' premier contract research organisation) has carried out a number of studies of emissions. These show that emissions from the airport are relatively low. Despite this, Eindhoven Airport N.V. is committed to an ongoing endeavour to reduce emissions further, particularly of CO2.

The policy of discouraging Chapter 2 aircraft from using the airport is acting not only to curb noise but also to reduce air pollution.

CO2 neutral flying

In May 2007 Eindhoven Airport started the ‘Natuurlijk Vliegen’ [Natural Flying] campaign to encourage its passengers to fly 100% CO2 neutral.

To facilitate this, the airport entered into a joint venture with GreenSeat, part of the Klimaat Neutraal Group [CO2 Neutral Group]. GreenSeat already offers this type of service through its website:  www.greenseat.com. The revenue from compensation is used for climate projects where a comparable reduction of CO2 is achieved elsewhere. The projects used are checked by an independent organisation.

n doing this, Eindhoven Airport became the first Dutch airport to take the initiative, together with its passengers, to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases resulting from air traffic.

Soil
Eindhoven Airport has a soil management plan that has been set up to limit and manage the risk of soil contamination due to operational activities.

Waste
Earlier investigations have revealed that the integral waste handling by users of the airport is excellent. In order to be able to continue successfully monitoring of the collection and disposal of waste flows a recycling park was set up next to the terminal in 2006. The park has a compacting container for non-recyclable waste, underground glass and paper containers and specific food containers for the hotel, restaurant and catering trade and for customs.

Energy & Water
In order to limit the consumption of energy as much as possible and to monitor it successfully in the future, various investments were made in the new-development of the terminal in 2005 and thereafter:
- Building management system
- Cold and heat storage
Cold and Heat Storage (CHS) has been installed to control the climate in the terminal. The water is drawn from a depth of 65 meters and connected to the floor heating in the terminal via a heat exchanger and heat pump. The heated water is then stored at a depth of 65 meters. In the summer months this facility provides the cooling that is required. The ground water extraction is minimal because the water is recaptured.
- Grey water system
A buffer has been installed on the airport site to collect rainwater. In the event of a disaster (fuel spill for example) it has oil and fat separation. The system has been constructed in such a way that the water in the underground storage is also used to flush the toilets and urinals (grey water).
