The environment

In balance with the social and physical environment

Eindhoven Airport exists to play an enduring role in meeting the growing demand for air travel. Society, on the other hand, attaches greater and greater weight to a green environment and cleaner air.

As it grows in stature as an international airport, Eindhoven Airport is therefore keen to ensure that, having due regard to the quality of the social and physical environment in which it is situated, its operations and continued development are attuned to the interests of all parties: on the one hand the interests of customers both at home and abroad and on the other hand those of local residents and business.

Transparency and openness contribute to mutual understanding of all sides' interests and options and are thus the first step on the way to good collaboration.

The Regional Agreement

The Regional Agreement was signed by Eindhoven Airport, the Belangenbehartiging Omwonenden Welschap, the Brabantse Milieufederatie, the provincial government of Brabant, and the municipalities of Eindhoven, Oirschot, Eersel, Veldhoven and Best in August 2000. It contains both medium and long-term agreements about the continuity of the airport and the environmental conditions for the surrounding area.

This contract includes agreements on opening times, the maximum permitted noise nuisance, conciliation of differences, and the installation of a route monitoring system and sound measurement posts. GLOBE, a consultation platform in which all contract parties are represented, supervises correct compliance with the agreements that have been reached.

The regional agreement was reached after lengthy consultation with local residents, local government and environmental organisations in the region. The continuity of the airport and the reduction of noise nuisance are prime considerations here. Together an attempt has been made to deal with the issue of noise nuisance in an innovative manner and to respect each other’s interests when doing so.

The following agreements have been made in the regional agreement:

• Development of the airport is primarily aimed at the business sector;
•  Growth in air traffic must keep step with a reduction in the noise nuisance;
• In the new situation the maximum noise load from civil aviation at Eindhoven Airport will be limited; the area of the 35 KE civil noise load contour will be limited at 4.62 km2;
•  The current opening times remain unchanged (Monday to Friday 06.00-22.45; Saturday 08.00-20.00 and Sunday 10.00-22.00);
• The current distinction between heavy and non-heavy flight movement lapses;
• The current limit of 18,050 flight movements per annum (maximum take-off weight from 6,000 kg) is maintained during the transition phase;
• A large number of measures are to be introduced to limit the noise nuisance;
• GLOBE (Gezamenlijk Luchthaven-Omwonenden Beraad Eindhoven) will supervise the implementation of the agreements that have been made;
• Ensuring that civil and military aviation remains separate.
